This photograph is part of a long-term project that has continued since 2012, based on the theme of symbiosis.
It is created through an ongoing exploration of the relationships among the diverse living beings—humans, animals, and plants—that inhabit the natural environments of Japan.
With a deep interest in each of these connections, the work seeks to trace and reflect the subtle links that bind them together

I began photographing the winter mountains in 2012, drawn to their beauty and the endlessly silent scenery. There, I came to understand the cycle of life and death that unfolds in the winter mountains—including hunting—and the long passage of time woven between humans, nature, and animals. I also began to perceive the workings of nature and human activity within the social backdrop of depopulated villages and declining populations.
Through continued interactions with the people living there, I came to learn about each person’s unique way of engaging with nature.
Today, I incorporate perspectives from natural theory and science into my work, photographing the many connections that exist within nature—including humans, animals, plants, water, earth, wind, light, and time. Each photograph explores the background of these relationships and engages in a quiet dialogue with nature.
